.lumen builds glasses that empower the blind to live a better life.
There are 40 million blind individuals today, increasing to over 100 million by 2050. Despite all the technological advancements, when it comes to their mobility the only solutions are thousands of years old: the guide dog and the white cane. The guide dog is unanimously seen as a great solution, but it has a few drawbacks: training one costs between 30 to 60 thousand dollars; but by far the biggest problem is that a blind individual can’t properly take care of a guide dog, it’s too much responsibility. However, the main advantages of a guide dog can now be replicated in technology without the drawbacks that make one a non-scalable solution.
.lumen builds glasses that mimic the main features of the guide dog, using the latest technologies from autonomous driving and robotics. Using them, blind individuals can increase their independence and improve their education, employment, and social life.
.lumen is a one-year-old startup that grew tremendously fast, already reaching a team of 40. In the last year, the glasses have been tested with over 200 blind individuals with great positive feedback.
Production and global scaling are set for 2022, and .lumen is aiming at helping over 100,000 blind individuals by 2024.
