AR/VR in aerospace technology

VizworX has made two major strides in the AR/VR sector over the past year – the Virtual Operations Environment (VOE) and the 3D Collaborative Space Situation Awareness System (3DSSAS). Both projects provide innovative solutions to the space and operations industries that exemplify the use of AR/VR in aerospace.

The Virtual Operations Environment (VOE) is a powerful representation of a control room completely reconstructed in virtual reality. By using AR/VR in aerospace, VOE reduces cognitive load and streamlines a variety of control room processes, while making the control room accessible anywhere at any time. Through VR, operators can analyze, chart and compile data from a variety of sources in a tangible, hands-on way. The interface allows users to move and sort data in any way they see fit, allowing each individual operator the ability to personalize their screens and panels. The VOE project was made in collaboration with Canadian Digital Supercluster, MDA and Simon Fraser University as part of the “Protecting Our Oceans” project. This Virtual Reality in aerospace project focuses on identifying undocumented vessels to prevent illegal fishing and human trafficking, protecting coastal communities and ensuring the ocean remains healthy for further generations.

Since working on the Virtual Operations Environment (VOE), VizworX started a collaboration with the University of Calgary, using the knowledge gained to make several proposals to NATO. The proposed solution, the 3D Collaborative Space Situation Awareness System (3DSSAS) brings together best-in-class commercial technology and space science research to create an informed decision support system for space situational awareness.

The 3DSSAS allows for the integration of AR/VR in aerospace technology with satellite and terrestrial sensor feeds to provide a clear picture of complex situations. This results in better decision-making. The project combines powerful aurora data visualizations with the Virtual Operations Environment and 3D model review software to create a comprehensive experience for space monitoring.
