FundamentalVR – training the surgeons of tomorrow

FundamentalVR’s Fundamental Surgery platform is the first in the world to combine VR, haptics, deep data, AI and multimodal learning. It provides immersive education simulations that allow users to experience the same sights, sounds, and sensations they world in the real world, unlocking access to quality surgery education for millions of prospective surgeons across the world. Its immersive solutions help life-science, pharmaceutical, and medical device companies accelerate the safe and compliant introduction of medical innovations, as well as aiding medical institutions, hospitals, and surgical educators deliver curriculum-based, professionally accredited training experiences remotely.

During the height of COVID, Fundamental Surgery has allowed medical education to continue when social distancing and the reduction on elective surgeries made in-person training almost impossible. It has profoundly changed the way immersive technology is used in medical education.

At its core is a proprietary technology called HapticVRTM, made possible by the company’s Haptic Intelligence EngineTM, a hardware agnostic solution that delivers full kinesthetic force feedback haptics into a variety of handheld devices ranging from base station held instruments through to haptic gloves within a submillimeter of accuracy. HapticVR is used in medical simulations to mimic the physical cues of surgical actions, medical tools, and a variety of tissue variations.

Fundamental Surgery is a hardware-agnostic, multimodal platform that fuses Cutaneous (tactile vibration) and Kinesthetics (force, feedback & position) haptics in a single platform, optimized for blended learning. The gold standard education capabilities of its HapticVRTM modality are complimented by tethered and standalone VR, desktop, and mobile modalities tailored to different stages of the learning, bringing a new level of realism to medical education that is a credible alternative to traditional teaching methods. The platform’s unique hardware-agnostic characteristic enables surgeons to be trained in any setting, at any time, anywhere in the world, without the need to procure dedicated equipment, to the extent that the need for surgeons to practice in wet labs, on cadavers or patients could be eliminated within just a few years.

The @HomeVR modality brings Fundamental Surgery simulations to standalone headsets including, but not limited to, Oculus Quest and HTC Vive Focus Plus, providing a highly mobile and cost-effective way to expand immersive experiences to users remotely anywhere in the world. Its multi-user functionality allows an unlimited number of users to meet, interact, teach and collaborate within virtual classrooms and operating rooms from anywhere in the world.

Fundamental Surgery currently offers education simulations for a range of procedures, devices, and techniques within the ophthalmology and orthopedic medical disciplines. Its orthopedic content has been accredited by both the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
