The Age of HI + AI is being shaped by a diverse group of visionaries and innovators from various fields, each contributing their unique expertise and perspectives. Here are some of the frontrunners. This BOLD Awards’ list is by no means exhaustive, and there are many other amazing researchers, entrepreneurs, and activists working at the intersection of human intelligence and AI. However, these fifteen individuals represent some of the leading voices and efforts in this exciting and evolving field. They are in random order, please don’t add any significance to where anyone is in the list sequence.

15 HI and AI Innovators

Yoshua Bengio is a Canadian computer scientist known for his groundbreaking work in deep learning, particularly with artificial neural networks. He co-founded Mila, a leading AI research institute in Montreal.

Demis Hassabis is a British neuroscientist and AI researcher, co-founder of DeepMind, which is a London-based AI research lab acquired by Google in 2014. DeepMind has achieved significant breakthroughs in areas like protein folding and game playing.

Daphne Koller has spent most of her career at the boundary of two disciplines: machine learning and biomedicine. Her medtech startup ‘insitro’ combines functional genomics and lab automation to produce biological data at scale.

American computer scientist and researcher Fei-Fei Li specializes in computer vision and artificial intelligence. She is the director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and co-founded the ImageNet project, a large-scale image database that has been instrumental in the development of deep learning algorithms.

Andrew Ng is founder of DeepLearning.AI which provides technical training on Generative AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and other topics. The courses are designed to offer hands-on practice with AI technologies, and provide practical, job-ready skills.

Yann LeCun is a French computer scientist known for his pioneering work in artificial neural networks and convolutional neural networks, which are now widely used in computer vision and image recognition. He is the Chief AI Scientist at Meta (formerly Facebook).

Bret Victor is an American computer scientist and author known for his work on reinventing the computer interface, exploring novel ways for humans to interact with information and data.

Julie Hochstein is an American computer scientist and interaction designer specializing in tangible user interfaces and embodied interaction. She is the founder of Studio Elsewhere, a design studio that creates interactive experiences through blurring the lines between the physical and digital worlds.

Hiroshi Ishii is a Japanese computer scientist and interaction designer known for his work on tangible user interfaces and tangible bits, which are physical objects that can be used to control and manipulate digital information.

Ray Kurzweil is an American futurist and inventor who predicts that technological advancements will lead to the singularity, a hypothetical moment in time when technological progress accelerates beyond human comprehension.

Greg Yang is a mathematician and was formerly a researcher at Microsoft Research. He is currently developing a framework for understanding large neural networks, with an ultimate aim to develop a Theory of Everything for large scale deep learning that tells us the optimal way of scaling neural networks, and provides robust understanding of such models to guide safety and alignment efforts.

A leading researcher in human-computer interaction, Pedro Domingo explores how AI can personalize learning experiences and empower individuals with cognitive disabilities.

Co-founder of the Santa Fe Institute, Tom Mitchell investigates how humans and AI can learn from each other, focusing on theoretical foundations and practical applications of human-AI teaming.

Genevieve Bell is Director of the Mozilla Foundation, and focuses on the social and ethical implications of AI, promoting responsible development and ensuring human values are embedded in AI systems.

The author of “Weapons of Math Destruction,” Cathy O’Neil, advocates for transparent and accountable AI systems, urging human oversight and collaboration to mitigate potential biases and harms.

Key Takeaways

This is just a small selection of the many brilliant minds shaping The Age of AI and HI. It’s an exciting time to be alive, and it will be fascinating to see how these and other visionaries continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the years to come.

At the same time, though, it’s important to note that the field of AI + HI is constantly evolving, and new names are emerging all the time. This list is by no means exhaustive, and there are many other talented individuals making significant contributions. Keep an eye on the latest developments in this rapidly changing field, and you’re sure to discover even more inspiring visionaries and innovators.

Which innovators in the field of HI and AI would you add to the list? We will update this blog as we move through 2024, so please let us know.
